When you're holding the wrong key

key and lock

Have you ever had an epiphany that changed everything? Something that became a KEY to your breakthrough?

For Trevan and me, it was the moment we finally realized that anything was truly possible. That belief, and the confident expectation that came with it, helped us triple our income in three months. It was the key that unlocked our first door.

Then we started seeing opportunities everywhere and jumped at nearly all of them, intending to repeat what had worked so well the first time. After all, more success in more endeavors using a dependable approach should be a good thing, right??

But the key that opened our first door became the very thing that locked us out of the next.

We kept reaching for the one that had worked, with more optimism, more confident expectation... and knowing it had been a good key before, we kept forcing it. But it caused us to be spread too thin. We lost our laser focus, and it cost us years and thousands of dollars in setbacks.

If you've ever tried to force an old key into a new lock, you know what happens. It doesn't just fail to open. The harder you push and twist, the more the lock can seize up, until nothing will turn it.

That's what I've come to understand about success. No matter how successful we get, the key that opened one door rarely opens the next, and because it worked so well, it's the last thing we think to question.

When the next door won't open, we turn harder, and that very effort can be exactly what jams it.

I see this in some of the most accomplished people we know. Doctors, business owners, professionals, and investors who have every reason to feel successful, and do, and who still sense there's something more they're meant to do. They aren't stuck because they don't know enough or haven't been successful enough. Often they're stuck precisely because what they know, worked so well that they keep reaching for it.

So here's a question worth sitting with this week. What was the key that opened your first door? And is it possible you're still trying it on a door that's asking for something else?

Trevan and I have been working on something for people who are standing at exactly this kind of door. We call it The Fulcrum Advantage, and I'll be sharing more about it soon. Stay tuned.

With love,

Leslie
